Giant Sequoia National Monument

On April 15, 2000, President Clinton created Giant Sequoia National Monument with a presidential proclamation. The good news is that the proclamation that created Giant Sequoia National Monument stipulated that snowmobile travel must be restricted to designated roads. That's a big improvement because they used to be allowed to roam cross-country.

The bad news is that the Management Plan for the Monument designates essentially every road on the monument open to snowmobile use. This means that skiers and snowshoers can't get away from the noise and pollution of the snowmobiles because (a) it is almost impossible to get more than 1/2 mile from a road, and (b) unless you navigate by map and compass you are relegated to skiing on roads with the snowmobiles because there are almost zero public marked ski and snowshoe only trails on the monument.

Snowlands Network continues to be engaged on this issue.
